Movie Monday: The King's Man (2021)

After two years of rescheduled release, The King’s Man is finally coming to theaters on December 22, 2021. This long-anticipated movie is the third installment in the Kingsman film series which is based on the comic, The Secret Service, by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons. The King’s Man serves as a prequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kingsman: The Golden Circle.

As a period spy film, The King’s Man will explain the origins of this secret society as they race to prevent the world’s worst masterminds from starting a war to destroy life as we know it. However, because this film is set against the backdrop of WWI, the characters that we know and love from the franchise will not be making an appearance. Instead, we are joined by a new set of characters played by some of the best in the industry.

Ralph Fiennes is cast as Orlando, the Duke of Oxford, and the apparent creator of The Kingsman. Alongside him is Harris Dickinson who plays Orlando’s son, Conrad. Two other new Kingsman members are introduced, Polly and Shola, played by Gemma Arterton and Djimon Hounsou respectively. This film will see another Merlin, though, played by Stanley Tucci. The King’s Man is also slated to feature some formidable villains including Daniel Bruhl, Charles Dance, Rhys Ifans, Tom Hollander, and Matthew Goode. Most intriguing though is Aaron Taylor-Johnson who is listed as playing Lee Unwin, suggests that we will see Eggsy’s family origins in the Kingsman service.

This long-anticipated film with a strong cast and an intriguing look into the origins of the Kingsmen will surely draw viewers back into the theaters since the last Kingsman film was released in 2017. The King’s Man offers an incredibly promising action-packed film that will test the strength of the Kingsmen set against the ravages of WWI.
