Movie Monday: King Richard (2021)

King Richard is based on the true-life story of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams. They would not have become who they are today if it weren’t for their father, Richard Williams. He is the man who kept supporting and coaching them until they grew up to achieve their dreams and eventually become world champions.

Director Reinaldo Marcus Green and screenwriter Zach Baylin were able to align the movie’s focus on how Richard Williams, through determination and a miracle, could change his family’s life for the better. Williams was able to pull his family out of poverty by placing his full support on both Venus and Serena in becoming future tennis stars.

The film takes place in Compton, California, where Williams trained his daughters both day and night in the tennis courts. He was very persistent and committed to reaching his goals, and with his two girls, he beat the odds. The movie involves some documented footage of Williams and his daughters that included camera footage and TV broadcasts showing the Williams family's accomplishments.

Will Smith, who starred as Richard Williams, was nominated and won a Golden Globe for his outstanding role as best actor in a drama motion picture. Starring alongside him was Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton, who portrayed Venus and Serena Williams.

Overall, the movie has an exciting storyline revolving around determination and persistence in achieving one’s goals. King Richard is a true example of how a family who started with nothing could turn the tables and change their lives. Anyone can achieve their dreams even in the most challenging circumstances with true courage and willpower. It takes strong commitment and dedication to work towards what a person wants most in their lives.
