Movie Monday: House of Gucci (2021)

The House of Gucci unravels the story behind one of the biggest fashion empires that exist today. An outsider Patrizia Reggiani marries into the Gucci family only to discover that her uncontrolled ambition starts to tear apart the family legacy which provokes events of betrayal, corruption and conclusively murder.

The film is directed by Ridley Scott who is very well known for his award-winning movies such as Gladiator and Black Hawk Down. House of Gucci brings about an amazing cast such as Lady Gaga and Oscar winners Al Pacino and Jared Leto.

The movie is based on the true story of how the Gucci family rose to fame and the conflicts that they faced, which eventually led to their downfall. Guccio Gucci was the first founder of the Gucci fashion empire but soon after his death both greed and turmoil took hold of his sons and the rest of the family which eventually led to the family losing ownership to the Gucci brand. The film was adapted from Sara Gay Forden’s 2001 non-fiction book which holds the same name as the movie.

By the 70s the third generation of Gucci’s had entered the picture and this is where the movie’s plot takes place. Adam Driver, who plays Maurizio, travels to New York to establish a line of succession with his uncle. The line of Gucci as owners of the acclaimed brand ends with Maurizio when he is forced to sell his shares as the biggest stakeholder. He goes bankrupt because of hasty decisions and overspending that lead him to sell his shares to investors.

House of Gucci is definitely a movie that is worth the watch as it is filled with many surprises and twisted events. Be sure to bring your drinks and popcorn with you as you lie back and enjoy the movie.
